Textura Belgica Font
Textura Belgica is a faithful digitalization of the black-letter type used in the Dutch language area from the 16th to the 20th century. Unlike many other online blackletter fonts, Textura Belgica provides full support for the special characters necessary for creating personal facsimiles.
This font was digitalized using a high-resolution scan of a sheet containing all letters, originally created by type cutter and founder Hendrick van den Keere from Gent in the 16th century. In addition to this base sheet, I utilized scans from the Dutch States Translation of the Bible from 1637 and other sources, including my personal collection of Bibles and a catechism from the 18th and 19th centuries.
I named this font Textura Belgica because during the ‘golden age’ of this font style, ‘Belgica’ was the Latin term used for the entire Netherlands, equivalent in area to the modern Benelux countries. For instance, the Latin name for the Dutch colony New Netherland was “Nova Belgica.”
