Graphik Font Family
Graphik font family is a popular sans-serif typeface designed by Christian Schwartz in 2009. It is known for its versatility, low contrast, and large x-height which make it suitable for a wide range of applications including display, text, captions, navigation systems, and map-making.
Inspiration and Development
Graphik was inspired by the appealing plainness seen in many lesser-known 20th century European sans serifs and in the hand-lettering of classic Swiss Modern posters. The lighter weights were influenced by the less popular sans serifs that competed with Futura, Helvetica and Univers, while the heavy end of the family is inspired in part by Paul Renner’s Plak.
The typeface was first drawn as the house style for Schwartzco Inc., further developed for Condé Nast Portfolio, and later for Wallpaper* and T, the New York Times Style Magazine.
In summary, Graphik is a versatile, low-contrast sans-serif family with a large x-height and extensive language support, making it a popular choice for a wide range of design projects.
